Volterra, Italy
Two workshops, starting on the 7th of
June and the 13th of September, offer the opportunity to work
alabaster, a very
ductile stone.
Global Stone Workshop® operates in co-operation with Escaia Srl, a
family owned company that runs an alabaster quarry with top quality
stone, a farm and an alabaster laboratory in the town of Volterra.
The town, built on a mountaintop, is in the region of Tuscany,
midway between Florence and Pisa.
Alabaster, a type of crystalline gypsum, has been worked for thousands
of years in this region. The Etruscans have left many artefacts,
figurines and urns made of this material, valued for its translucency.
Participants to these workshops will be able to choose the stone
directly from the quarry and work it at the farm or at the laboratory.
