Alabaster workshop in Quinto de Ebro
/Zaragoza, Spain
The workshop starts on May 3-7. 300€ for one week workshop and 6 days in single room accommodation with bath and breakfast.
Located on the left bank of the Ebro River, Quinto de Ebro/Zaragoza is a typical Spanish hamlet. Certainly not distinguishable from many others were it not for its location in an area where 85% of the world’s alabaster is produced. Alabaster is found in many colors and all sizes – from small stones to 15,000 Kg. blocks.
Here we have discovered a lab, the “Arastone” with the largest and best alabaster quarries in the world and a lot of room to work. Global Stone Workshop® organises workshops at Arastone from 3 May 2010.
The workshops are similar to those in Carrara. Each participant will have his/her own work place with air and power outlets. Pieces of alabaster of all sizes will be available. A small block of white alabaster per week is included in the rate.
Participants must bring their own tools. It will be possible, however, to purchase additional tools at good prices on site.
Nearby the lab there is a hotel where the group will be housed. Breakfast is included in the workshop fee.
40 km away is the city of Zaragoza with its great cathedrals and museums. All the most important altar-pieces are sculpted in alabaster and painted. The same material is employed for internal ornamentation, floors, columns and capitals.
In the Aragon region there are numerous monasteries built between 1200 and 1500.
